Across the United States, National Heritage Areas play a critical role in preserving history and fostering an appreciation of a region’s rich heritage. Silos & Smokestacks is one of 62 such organizations across the country—and its role has perhaps never been more important.
In a rapidly evolving world, it is imperative to preserve and champion the agricultural and industrial roots that built our country. These perspectives play a pivotal role in defining how different regions contributed to our advancement as a country as well as honoring the people who shaped, and were shaped by, the work at hand. Silos & Smokestacks is an organization dedicated to bringing those stories to life.
A national heritage area including over 100 Midwest sites, Silos & Smokestacks sought to transform its office in Waterloo, Iowa, into an interactive destination that sparks curiosity. Once a traditional administrative hub, the space needed to evolve into a vibrant experience, inviting visitors to explore both the natural world and other Silos & Smokestacks locations. McCullough Creative reimagined the office with hands-on features that engage diverse audiences. The result is a captivating space that inspires imagination and deepens visitors’ appreciation for Silos & Smokestacks, motivating them to discover the region’s rich history and landscapes.

It’s not enough to tell people how they connect to the world around them. They need to see and feel these connections in real time. Interactive features, like measuring their heights against the region’s crops and exploring regional transportation through a transformed garage door, spark curiosity and help these connections hit home.

Interactive touchscreens empower visitors to tailor their journeys, allowing them to dive into content that sparks their curiosity or discover other Silos & Smokestacks locations across the region. The experience puts visitors in control, making each exploration personal, exciting, and filled with endless possibilities.
