Prairie Root Displays
Custom Educational Displays
As an essential part of a Midwestern nature center, a prairie-root feature can promote conservation both above and below the surface of our native soil. Not just telling visitors about the critical role of underground root systems, a prominently displayed example brings the importance of perennial roots to visual life by actually showing them.
Having created eye-catching and informative exhibits for a wide range of Iowa nature centers, McCullough Creative has developed an expertise in the area of designing, constructing, and installing durable, eye-catching displays that showcase full-size prairie root systems. Working with conservation clients, root growers, and ecosystem experts, we have perfected a proven process that results in engaging and educational experiences for audiences of all ages.

HARRISON COUNTY CONSERVATION
Growing unseen underground, the complex systems of prairie roots often extend deeper into the soil than the plants visible above them. Highlighting their massive lengths can be challenging. For this root system displayed at Willow Lake Nature Center, special care, planning, and craftsmanship were needed to design, build, and install the acrylic case and its interpretive signage.
PRAIRIE RIVERS OF IOWA
Prairie Rivers of Iowa presented us with the challenge of creating a traveling exhibit for a five-foot-tall prairie root along with native prairie flora and soil samples. With public education and easy transport top of mind, we designed and fabricated a freestanding acrylic case that artfully suspends the root. Removable vinyl graphics enable content updates to be made whenever necessary.
WASHINGTON COUNTY CONSERVATION
When Washington County Conservation wanted to display and educate visitors about its 14-foot-long prairie root, coming up with an out-of-the-box idea was right up our alley. Wrapping some of the root at the bottom of the display and exposing a segment for visitors to actually touch became a sensory solution. Informational text and photos educate while adding to the visual appeal. And the entire exhibit is effortlessly movable.
JACKSON COUNTY CONSERVATION
For Jackson County Conservation, we designed, built, and installed a customized acrylic kiosk with a weighted base to house an exceptionally large 65-inch-long prairie root. A pair of integrated informational panels provide a deeper dive into ecosystem essentials. Vinyl graphics applied along the side of the connected tube help young visitors gauge their heights compared to the length of the root.
